Avignon Visitor Information
Situated in the Provence region of the Alps, lies Avignon. A popular stopover for Parisians en route to the Mediterranean coast, Avignon is a tranquil respite to normal hectic living. Famous for its song 'Sur le pont d'Avignon' the bridge in question (in its more modern disposition) can be seen today crossing the River Rhone.
Places to see here include the Notre Dame des Doms with its breath taking views over the city with its sweeping and winding medieval streets. Atop the hill you will find the impressive Palais des Papes where Roman Catholic popes were once situated prior to moving to Rome. Once considered the Vatican of the North its papal court was disbanded in the early fifteenth century.
Whilst in Avignon you will enjoy the sights in the Place de l'Horloge including the Opera House and the grand Hotel de Ville.
